Europe is producing less beef – what does this mean for importers in Asia

Forecasts indicate that beef production in the European Union will continue to decline, while demand is expected to remain stable. As a result, the market is shifting towards higher-value products and a more selective supply. For importers, this means access to more consistent, high-quality European beef, however in more limited quantities, further increasing the importance of long-term trade partnerships.

The European cattle farming and beef production sector is currently at a turning point that requires a fundamental redefinition of existing market strategies. The steady decline in beef production volumes observed across Europe over recent years is not a temporary phenomenon but a long-term structural trend. Total EU beef production is projected to decrease by approximately 9.2%, eventually stabilising at around 6.1 million tons by the mid-2030s[1].

One of the key development directions for the European beef sector is the gradual shift in emphasis from volume production towards greater added value, quality, and specialization. Producers are increasingly focusing not only on production volume but, above all, on increasing product value through specialization, quality certification, and adapting their offer to the most demanding markets. However, the shift from quantity to quality requires fundamental changes at every stage of the supply chain – from the selection of genetically appropriate cattle breeds, through sustainable feeding methods based on local feeds, to stringent animal welfare standards and precise meat maturation processes. High-quality European beef is strengthening its position as a product valued for its safety, traceability, culinary qualities, and high production standards. This strategy allows for a significantly higher margin per head of cattle, effectively offsetting lower production volumes.

This ongoing transformation among European suppliers is also having a direct impact on global markets, particularly on discerning importers from Asian countries. Characterized by a dynamically growing middle class and a developing premium HoReCa sector, Asia has a huge appetite for top-quality European beef. However, in the face of reduced overall supply, the current occasional spot purchases are no longer guaranteeing supply stability for Asian partners. Building long-term commercial relationships with European beef producers is becoming increasingly important.

Transitioning to a long-term contractual partnership model offers mutual benefits, with particularly significant advantages for importers. For buyers in markets such as Japan and Hong Kong, the primary benefit of long-term supply agreements is guaranteed access to premium-quality beef with exceptional consistency. In the luxury meat segment, the consistency of product attributes – such as colour, tenderness, juiciness, marbling, and flavour profile – is of fundamental importance. High-end restaurants in Hong Kong and Tokyo cannot afford fluctuations in the quality of the steaks they serve, as their customers expect the same outstanding standard with every visit.

Long-term partnerships enable European cattle producers to plan their production cycles with precision, tailoring them to the specific and demanding requirements of Asian buyers. In turn, importers gain confidence that the beef they purchase will consistently meet the desired quality standards over extended periods. This stability reduces market risk, supports the development of strong culinary brands built around European beef, and provides a solid foundation for the sustainable growth of transcontinental trade.
